LADY BEETLES: WHERE DO THEY COME FROM AND HOW TO KEEP THEM AWAY

How to Keep Ladybugs Out of Your Home
Lady bug on a plant

It’s fall, which means it’s time for lady beetles, often called the ladybug, to once again make their annual debut. Lady beetles thrive in fall months, and though they are prominent throughout the year, we often see them most as it’s cooling down, as they are looking for a cold weather home.

Lady beetles are most common in the Midwest and Southern regions of the United States, though they are known to populate other areas as well.

ARE LADY BEETLES HARMFUL?

Though they can be a nuisance in volume, ladybugs are actually a helpful pest. They eat tiny pests, including those that are dangerous to plants and crops. And they do so by the masses, hunting mites and other aphids. In fact, ladybugs have been referred to as a gardener’s best friend, as they help control crop-ruining species. Before these tiny creatures have a chance to take over your flowers or veggie beds, ladybugs can actually help keep population levels in check.

Meanwhile, they don’t harm your plants, but rather help fertilize and keep plants healthy.

In this sense, lady beetles are definitely not harmful. In fact, you could say that they are actually aiding in your gardening methods.

However, annoyance comes into play during the cooler months of the year.

LADYBUGS TAKING OVER YOUR HOME

Much like anyone seeking shelter for the winter, lady beetles, too, work to take shelter before and during cooler parts of the year. They are biologically trained to remain in a pack, and to avoid extreme weather situations, such as winter temps.

What makes them particularly worrisome, however, is their pack mentality. Lady beetles actually send out scouts who look for different areas to shelter. Once a suitable area has been found, they send a message out to their fellow friends and family members, letting them know they should return for the long winter.

In other words, you can end up with an entire population of ladybugs in your home or office. Hundreds of these tiny critters can suddenly seem not so pleasant. With them flying through your home and huddling in the masses, ladybugs go from a not-so-bad garden helper, to an imminent pest.

That’s where we come in!
